Standing Against Anti-Asian Hate

In March 2021, the Atlanta spa shootings and the rise in anti-Asian violence across the country deeply impacted communities in the San Gabriel Valley. The hateful rhetoric and racism normalized during the Trump era fueled attacks and fear, especially toward Chinese and Asian American women and elders. In that moment of grief and urgency, the need for solidarity across communities became clear.

SGV Progressive Action connected with partners across the region to create the San Gabriel Valley Community Vigil and Healing event. Organizations including Change West Covina, La Puente Mutual Aid, Cat 911 SGV, Pomona Protests, La Puente Together, and the People’s Power of El Monte came together to reject White supremacy, honor the victims, and provide a space for collective mourning and connection. We also pushed back against calls for increased policing, choosing instead to center community care, safety, and long-term investments in healing and justice.

More than 100 people gathered for a virtual and in-person vigil at Barnes Park, listening to speakers, artists, and organizers who shared stories, grief, and truth. The gathering was intimate and powerful. People sat on blankets with candles and signs, holding space for one another with compassion and resolve.

That day reminded us that solidarity is a practice. Our struggles are connected. And when we show up for each other, we build the world we deserve.
