Black Lives Matter
SGV Progressive Action grew out of the 2020 uprisings for Black Lives, when people across the country demanded justice after the murder of George Floyd and the continued killing of Black community members by police. In the San Gabriel Valley, marches, rallies, and teach-ins took place across multiple cities, often led by young people stepping into activism for the first time.
It became clear that the region needed a coordinated network to help these efforts grow. Many actions were happening independently without shared tools, strategies, or support. SGV Progressive Action formed to help build that connection and support Black Lives Matter organizing across the SGV.
In those early months, our work focused on amplifying demands for accountability in policing and public safety. We encouraged local governments to examine their budgets, confront racism, and listen to the communities most impacted by systemic harm. We helped organizers and groups connect with one another so the movement could be active, visible, and united across city boundaries.
The conversations that began in 2020 continue to shape expectations for justice, accountability, and public safety in our region. Residents are more engaged, more informed, and more willing to challenge systems that harm rather than protect.
Black lives matter.
