Mutual Aid
SGV Progressive Action deepened its work during the COVID-19 pandemic, when communities across the San Gabriel Valley faced uncertainty, isolation, and unequal access to resources. While government responses were slow and uneven, local residents stepped in to support one another through grassroots care and mutual aid.
During this time, we connected neighbors to food distribution efforts, language-accessible information, and community support networks. Many immigrant, working class, and multigenerational households in the SGV were disproportionately impacted, and the pandemic revealed long-standing inequities in health care, housing stability, technology access, and social safety systems.
Mutual aid became more than an emergency response. It became a reminder that our communities are strongest when we care for one another and share resources without conditions or hierarchy. The relationships built during this period helped strengthen solidarity across neighborhoods and laid the foundation for future organizing.
The pandemic made it clear that survival, stability, and justice are collective responsibilities. That understanding continues to shape how SGV Progressive Action builds community power and supports those most impacted by systemic harm.
